Ja Nene Natural Body Products has long used natural alternatives to the most common toxic ingredients that plague other bath and body products and cosmetics, and we are constantly checking the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep ingredient database for the safety and efficacy of the elements we use in our formulas. To give our customers the best and safest natural body products on the market, we scour the latest research to find high-quality ingredients that are known to be safe for use on your body. While there are are countless options out there, these are some of our favorite natural alternatives, including their EWG hazard score (1 being low hazard, 10 being high hazard).
Plant-based Butters and Oils
For skin humectants and moisturizers, we like to use plant-based butters and oils in our products. The natural fatty acids in Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, and (EWG Scores: 1) make excellent skin conditioners. As an added bonus, we don’t have to rely on petroleum products which, since they’re derived from processing crude oil, are inherently unsustainable. When they’re used as an ingredient in cosmetic and body care products, petroleum-based products can sometimes make skin conditions worse!
Try our Holo Holo Body Oil for a decadent treat for your skin.
We like to use SLS-free Ecocert Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (EWG Score: 1) as the bubbling agent in anything we need to be sudsy. This super gentle bubbling agent is even recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics! Unfortunately, most bubbling products use Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate as a bubbling agent (EWG Score: 3) which have been proven harmful, and is only allowed in "rinse-off" personal products. I defy anyone to show me that absolutely ALL of the shampoo or conditioner we apply actually gets rinsed off! The residue left behind can not only result in unhealthy hair and skin, it can cause disease long-term. This is especially dangerous for those recovering from cancer and other long-term health conditions or autoimmune disorders.
Our Lavender Bubble Bath made with Dead Sea Salts has some of the best bubbling action we've ever seen, natural or otherwise!
Essential oils provide wonderful natural scents to soaps, lotions, and perfumes, but we also like to use certified phthalate- and toluene free fragrances from a trusted supplier when we feel extra fancy. The phthalate (EWG Score: 4) and toluene (EWG Score: 10) found in other added fragrances have been shown to interrupt the endocrine system with major detrimental effects to your health - including reproductive issues.
One spritz of our Guardian Angel Aromatherapy Mist will convince you that essential oils are all you need for a beautiful fragrance!
There are tons of naturally-occurring preservatives out there - salt, sugar, and honey being the most tasty! In our products, we tend to use Pink Grapefruit Oil, Rosemary Extract, and Ecocert preservatives. Pink Grapefruit Oil and Rosemary Extract (EWG Score: 1) are natural antimicrobial agents, while Ecocert Gluconolactone (EWG Score: 1) and Sodium Benzoate (EWG Score: 3) are preservatives that occur naturally in mammals or plants. Using these ingredients help to ensure the other natural ingredients in our products don’t spoil as quickly (and, in the case of Gluconolactone, reduce the appearance of fine lines on mature skin), and avoid the health issues associated with parabens, formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing chemicals that other products use!
The use of Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil and Rosemary Extract in our Therapeutic Bath and Body Oil is critical to keep the delicate natural oils from going bad before you could use it!
Natural skin protectants are a great example of how the safety of an ingredient can vary based on use. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide have EWG scores of 1-3 depending whether it is aerosolized or inhaled, but when applied to the skin they are considered to be safe. These compounds are great for inhibiting UV light absorption in sun creams, and make the perfect alternatives to the Bezophenone used in sun-protection products like lip balm, foundations, and sunscreens which is bioaccumulative (meaning it accumulates in your body with frequent use) and is linked to various health issues from cancer to endocrine-related illnesses.
The Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide in our SunGlo Lotion is the perfect way to mitigate the effects of sun exposure - and the addition of our natural oil blend conditions the skin at the same time!
Fear-based marketing is an incredibly effective way to generate revenue while appealing to our desire for safe products, but it can go overboard. “Chemical-free” sounds great until we remember that water is a chemical! And even potentially harmful compounds are rendered totally safe depending on how it is added to a product; After all, we’d highly recommend that you not put free lye on your skin, but when it’s neutralized by soaping oils it becomes a crucial component of just about any soap! Educating ourselves and asking the right questions can make all the difference.
We always strive for transparency in our formulas, and we love getting the opportunity to talk with our customers about what we use in our products! Come visit our shop and we can find the perfect body product to fit your unique needs.
